Mission

Our mission is to support adults with developmental disabilities to discover their capabilities and to lead fuller lives in their home, at work, and in the community.

Most of us take for granted being able to get in the car and head for the grocery store to pick up something for dinner. For a person with a severe developmental disability, each step of that task may require extra effort and assistance, from making a grocery list and arranging transportation to choosing and paying for groceries. Support services provided by Las Trampas help more than 70 people with developmental disabilities turn the dream of full inclusion in the community into a reality.

John smiles at the mention of bowling. It's a passion he discovered at an early age. It's given him an opportunity to be a teacher and a leader, to gain self-confidence and poise. He's made a large circle of friends, found a place where he is on an equal playing field with others, has a skill he can build, and enjoys lots of fun times. Las Trampas supports John on the job and at home, but at the bowling alley he is on his own.

“When Ann broke her ankle and my parents were out of the country, I was contacted immediately by Las Trampas nurses and management. Two staff members accompanied my sister to the Emergency Room for her cast, assisting her so she was comfortable and secure in the hospital environment. My sister received high quality care and I saw how much the staff really cared about her well being.”

Like everyone we serve, Mike has a written plan for his life for the upcoming year. One measure of our success is how well Mike meets his goals. With staff and community support, he’s fulfilled several of his dreams: working as a crew member responsible for maintaining a Walnut Creek park; moving from an apartment to a small house shared with two friends; going to Disneyland twice; taking in more than 25 baseball games and other sporting events; and visiting the local airport and train station just for fun. Las Trampas supports him as he takes each small step to his goals, helping him get to his job, budget his money, take good care of himself, and make choices about how to spend his time. Overcoming severe hearing impairment and other health challenges, Mike is active, engaged, and happy.

That’s our mission, and we are committed to it 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
